And I, the last, go forth companionless,

And the days darken round me, and the years,

Among new men, strange faces, other minds.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson, The Passing of Arthur

    (Idylls of the King, 1859-1885)

    有一种阅读Proof from the Book的感觉..

Tchaikovsky: String Quartet No. 1 in D major, Op. 11: Andante cantabile

    Functions of One Complex Variable-
    Probability Theory-
    Numerical Analysis

For Painting a Portray of a Bird
    by Jacques Prévert
    Paint, first, a cage,
    with the gate open
    paint, then
    something pretty
    something simple
    something beautiful
    something useful
    for the bird
Then place the canvas on a tree
    in a garden
    in the woods
    or in a forest
    hiding yourself behind the tree
    saying nothing
    making no movements
    Sometimes the bird comes quickly
but it may also take years
for it to decide to stay
    Do not discourage yourself
    wait
wait as if it be the years in the waiting
the quickness or the tardiness of its arrival
    does not depend
on the successfulness of your painting
    When it arrives
    if it will arrive
    keep the most profound silence
wait until it enters the cage,
shut the gate tenderly with the brush
    and then
erase all the barriers one after another
while being careful enough not to touch any of its feathers
    Then paint a tree
    choosing the most beautiful branch
    for the bird
paint also the green foliage and the freshness of wind
the dust of the sun
and the noises of insects in the grasses under the heat of summer
and then wait for the bird to decide to sing
    If it never sings
that is because the painting is bad
but if it sings it should be a good sign
a sign that you may sign now
    Therefore snatch tenderly
    one feather of the bird
and write your name in one corner of the painting.
  • On Discrimination Against Manual Workers

There has been a long tradition of discrimination against manual worker. Generally considered inferior and ill-mannered, they are make the lower class of the society.
For those who hold a strong sympathy on the workers, there arises a question: what is the root of such bias against these people who put themselves into such a form of production, which is very close to what our ancestors had spent most of the time in?
Imagine a society where everyone has received a good deal of education that no one is obliged to do pure physical labor due to the lack of skills for a mental alternative. In such a world those who dedicate themselves to such jobs will receive good wages as well even for their unused knowledge and education simply because low salaries will turn them to other better-paid jobs they’re capable of. And they have chosen their vocation according to their interests, and would be respected by their knowledge as well as dedication and sacrifice to a kind of job that other people are unwilling to take. Therefore, a large proportion of the discrimination comes merely from the lack of knowledge, opportunity and eventually sufficient incoming.
Some may criticize the bad manners and vulgar tastes of the working class. But such problems are due to their education background and income status rather than the nature of a class. Having had a look at middle-class workers in contemporary developed countries, we shall see not that much difference between them and their brainworking neighbors. From this we can infer that the cultural disadvantage of working class comes from the lack of proper guidance in youth, not from their form of work.
Both of the two sources of discrimination we have discussed originated from unfair political policy and underdeveloped economy. The solution is simple enough if we look forward and work for a better welfare and the realization of education-for-all. However, there is a third kind of discrimination (we shall be talking about it later) is not as easily eradicated as the other two we’ve just proposed a solution to. It is not pointed at workers nor the working class, but at the work itself and its form of labor, which is more intrinsic compared to the other two, and therefore is much harder to sweep out.
We have always been paying technicians a good deal of money for their aid when we stuck in mechanics. What is the attitude of an elite white-collar (say, a lawyer or a dentist) when he is paying a piper twice as high as his hourly-income? He might be admiring the high wage, but never willing to take a piper's job. So why was that?
The answer to this embarrassing question is that we humans,  descendants of physical laboring animals though, hold a natural preference for mental work which is more efficient and had helped us so much in transcending our counterparts in the process of evolution. In this way physical labor is related to animality and brainwork to humanity. But such naïve dichotomy is not appropriate. Actual, on-field and physical work is no less necessary than their virtual, in-office and mental equivalent. This is partly because human, however intelligent, is still a species of animal and a part of biosphere and partly because once people are exonerated from heavy workload, they will instinctively enjoy the comfort brought by body movement and physical labor. We cannot blame what we are fond of. Therefore hopefully this kind of prejudice will die out when the demand of manual work decreases, meeting the trend of technical innovations of our society.
Hitherto we have concluded that our discrimination against physical laborers is composed of diverse sources and we can be quite optimistic that such a stain of human civilization will extinguish with the establishment of civil rights and development of economy.

    College Pressures: A Social Problem

For all times and places, higher education has never been merely an education. In the good old days, the university was a place for young bluebloods to grow into full gentlemen, serving as a facility more social than educational, while contemporarily as the social hierarchy blurs, college education has more or less been turned into a ladder to higher classes and social status.
We can’t deny that equal opportunity towards education is the first step to ultimate social justice, yet nevertheless since the society has never been as equal as a utopian kindergarten reserved for the young by their parents and educators, why should students build up their perspectives in accordance with their college experience, which is somewhat closer to that illusion than to cruel reality?
There is a tragic consequence of the faultage in the distribution of opportunities between universities and that of the real world. It is that some damned smart kids will advance themselves by being more explicitly pragmatic and competitive, turning the campus into a battlefield where they fight with all their might for being “elites”. From any economic book we can learn that the best way to eliminate the gap between supply and demand is to set up a bid or an auction. This couldn’t work more perfectly on our higher education, where the currency should be, as I prefer to call it, the potency of future academic, professional or commercial life. The students are desperate for it: some earn it by burning the midnight oil sketching reports for so-called undergraduate research; others might gain more by being elected a president of a student social club after a long run of publicity, and, to top it all off, it feels exactly like hitting the jackpot getting an internship in an investment bank. Each of these is a form of Pareto-inefficient competition. I didn’t see any chance that their magnus labor won’t eat up too much energy and thus drain their leisure time (and even class time) and eventually nullify their campus life that they’re supposed to enjoy. Pity for a generation that suffers from such tensions from so early an age.
Worse still, this sort of student doesn’t really fit into an education system that was originally academy-oriented. Hardly can a principal stay from his students’ utilitarianism, and keeps faith in academia. Our higher education would be ruined once the staff accepted the status quo and decided to follow such trends, concentrating on vocational education while turning away from the vocation of God. Two proverbs suffice to premonish: “An education is not an education without the Bildung of characters”; “science sans conscience n’est que la ruine de l’âme.”
It will all come to an end (and perhaps a doomsday, too) when new fashions overwhelm the old traditions and every university is filled with competitors seeking financial success and social recognition. But there could be no other ways unless we’ve found a satisfactory hierarchy for the whole civilization and the generations to come. As long as a student has been enrolled in a university, he or she shall be confronted with a harsh question: fiat pressus, or simply save them till graduation?

  • The Most Important Thing In Friendship

    Zhang Yan

    Translated by Li Xinyi

What is the most important thing in friendship? Various answers apply as the term friendship has long been messed up. Be careful with your definition of friends. A friend in need is not necessarily a friend in deed, and the one that you can count on when in trouble is not either necessarily qualified, even though which is usually the case. They are just companions. Further we are not talking about establishing or merely maintaining a friendship. We are here to seek the core value of friendship, the quality that draws our affection and energy, the single thing that makes friendship different and most cherishable.

It is not happiness, which simply makes a mate. It is not understanding or loyalty, which just makes a companion. And it is not a common goal, which just makes a comrade...What is left for friendship then? Love, right, love. But wait―isn’t it for lovers? People got really screwed up here. It is commonly agreed in the modern Western world that friendship is declining and the logic behind it is that intimate relations between men are considered a taboo because of the social over-awareness of homosexuality, and cross-gender friendship falls consequently. How should people be so mean of love when it comes to true friendship?

Love is definitely the most important thing in friendship. As we see, it is the withdrawal of love that forced the declining of the latter and its transformation into the inferior companionship or even fellowship. Love in friendship means the recognition of each other as an individual bearing respectful qualities and a noble heart, which is easy to crack without careful guards. It is love that makes Hamlet's friend sang for the "sweet prince". And in extreme cases, a warrior may have an enemy as a friend, for they love each other's pride, and their pride has been twisted with the sacred friendship.

Again, be careful with your definition of a friend. And devote your love to a true friendship.

  • A friend in need

It is generally believed that a friend in need must be a friend indeed. However, I, on the contrary, hold the opposite.

The point is, that we're usually less altruistic than assumed, expecting repays as a reward of kindly behaviors. In this sense, many a time those who offer a hand are more investors than friends. They make it an investment and seek interest in it. Or at least they think more friendship than friends.

Take Napoleon for example. When he failed in Waterloo for the first time, many of his fellowmen and followers helped him out of exile whereas the same scene didn't recur after his second failure after which he was imprisoned in southern Atlantic islands for life, for he had been counted useless. This is yet another good illustration of the old saying "Emperors have few friends."

On the other hand, a true friend is someone who'd warn you in advance of a crisis so that you wouldn't get trapped and accept less gratitude than "friends in need". This is to say, he places friends before friendship. But anyway, he won't put you aside when you're really in danger.

In a word, a friend indeed will be a friend in need, but not necessarily the other way around.

  • Pursuit of a Dream

A goal is a dream with a deadline: in writing, measurable, identifiable, attainable.

We all have dreams. Some may be in every prospect unrealistic, however the rest, which makes up a major part of good desires of human beings, seem reachable and quite convincing. In order to tell them apart from daydreaming, people often add to them a deadline, and consequently call them a goal.

So as one inquires into this definition, he would surely like to explore the abundant meanings of the word deadline. In the most restricted sense, a deadline is a specified time before which something must be done with. But generally speaking, in terms of goals, a deadline is a limitation and a regulation in the following fields: in its content, attainability and calculability.

Before we start something, we must make clear what we want is. And the best way is to write it down, because many a time mishap comes when people forgot the real purpose of their labors, and could not keep on with the right direction. Written words could definitely do much better than a blurry impression in reminding us of what we really should aim at. Once written down, it is fixed and definite, and that is where the foundation stone lies.

Just as we’ve mentioned in the first paragraph, the major difference between a dream and a goal is its realizability, or equivalently attainability. In a dream people could stretch his desire completely, letting his river of imagination flow unlimitedly on the boundless field of possibility, with neither dike of reality nor damp of ability. However when it comes to making goals, a down-to-earth attitude must be accompanied with, for if a target goes much beyond your ability, failure is almost inevitable. Even if succeeded, you’ll have to put too much work on it that it eventually becomes unworthy concerning input/output ratio. We’re rational people and will consider the balance of effort and effect, which is the art of life itself, not just victory of a single campaign in ignorance of the whole war, in comparison of which a general would surely choose the latter.

Talking about calculability, many of us may ask “why should a goal be measurable and why should I measure it?” The answer is that we must manage goals like a manager. And what effective management calls for is quantity control. Being discussed by Max Weber as the concept of “calculability” in the Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism and in other books as the most important characters of modern capitalist enterprises, it is widely used in contemporary government administration and enterprise management. In particular, the simplest way to quantity control of a goal, is to mark the percentage achieved and yet to be completed, in which the progression could be observed and encouragement would be provided with. And this is to say, works on measurement is not spent in vain.

So as we see, a dream becomes a goal when and only it is regulated with a deadline.
